The point of force is to establish the Good. It is when force is separated from its proper place that it requires safeguard.
The Good is that which is best for living with others cooperatively and harmoniously. Authority is what promotes this cooperative and harmonious personal and social life.
To the extent that one’s government displays force to entrench its own power, with the life of its people seen merely as a means to its own enrichment, it has disregarded its fundamental purpose and opened the opportunity of the radical critique of its authority.
President Trump has done this in D.C. He’s deployed the National Guard, a military organization run by the Army and Air Force, to the streets of our country’s capitol to combat crime, when violent crime is at a 30 year low.
There is no justification for the militarization of American cities. One is reminded of some of the first causes of American Revolutionaries: too many British soldiers on the streets.
